EMPOWERMENT OF WOMEN

Wherever we are and whatever our ministry, we are committed to be “women for women”.

We will work towards enabling women:

  • to become more aware of the inherent dignity and self-worth of women;
  • to recognize that women are made in the image of God with full equality with men;
  • to assume their rights as citizens of their respective countries in all areas, i.e., economic, legal, ecclesial, health care, education;
  • to promote women as agents of transformation in their own milieu.

Understanding that educating ourselves vis à vis women’s issues is primary to any effective action, we commit ourselves to:

  • identify and affiliate with groups already working toward the empowerment of women;
  • support self-reliance projects (e.g., credit unions, crafts) that empower women;
  • network as RSHM to link existing projects/works in different parts of the world;
  • educate men as well regarding these issues.

FEMINIST PERSPECTIVE

  • To become aware ourselves and to educate others to the multi-dimensional aspects of a feminist perspective and feminist theology.
  • To incorporate into our own attitudes and actions the feminist perspective which includes, but is not limited to:

    - self - esteem
    - generativity and compassion
    - fostering human relationships
    - networking or partnering with others
    - using inclusive language
    - inclusivity
    - feminist spirituality
  • To recognize that when we are speaking of a feminist perspective, we are speaking on many levels, including
    - the personal
    - the interpersonal
    - structural: family, church , politics, social, economics

CARE OF THE EARTH

  • We need to continue to deepen our awareness and change our attitudes toward Mother Earth:
    - We encourage and urge each one of us to use the gifts of Mother Earth consciously.
    - We continue to inform ourselves and others on environmental issues from a feminist perspective.
    - We integrate this consciousness into our spirituality.
  • We recommend the following actions to safeguard the gifts of Mother Earth:
    - Water is a universal right: it is not a commodity; therefore we urge:
    - studying the use/abuse of water and its effects on the peoples of the earth
    - advocating that water continue to be a free gift for all.
    - Be aware of where our food, clothing, etc., come from and who profits and who loses, and changing, if necessary, your lifestyle.
    - Be aware of our use of cars (carpooling when possible, using public transportation).
    - Learning to do with less so that others have more (paper, gasoline, recycling).
    - Become aware of the stance of political representatives/elected officials on environmental issues and advocate for the environment.
