The Greek word for icon (εικονα) also means “image” or “likeness,” related to εικεναι (be like, look like). An icon spreads the Gospel with an image instead of words, drawing us to the center-—Christ / God—-to pray and worship.

I created this icon, “Our Lady of the Sign” in March 2011. Our Lady’s hands extend in the orante (praying) position, here for the whole Christian Community, considered as Christ’s bride. Here is Christ, blessing in Mary, and carrying a scroll, the scroll of His authority. Mary becomes, as Christ becomes, a sign in virtue of the action of Christ within her. God, in Mary’s womb, becomes incarnate on earth. Francis of Assisi Kay, RSHM
